Week 5 Day 1

Two quotes about man's interaction with the environment both stand out.  "[The] raping of nature and civilizing of man go hand in hand" (page 2) and "[man] leaves the encompassing nature of those elements unchanged, and their generative powers undiminished[.]"

What stands out to me the most is that our ability to affect the environment has grown exponentially over the past century to the point of it being unimaginable destruction. I often think of the ethics of simply existing as a first-world human when my existence means quantifiable pollution and habitat destruction. If we are not working to mitigate the damage and extinctions we cause do we have the right to exist when it causes so much destruction?
